The Wentworth Enjoys the Cranmore Mountain Meisters

March 5th, 2010

The Wentworth staff is one of the hardest working group of individuals in the business.  We pride ourselves in the quality of service we put forth.  The hotels success is a reflextion on our success.

But……..

“all work an no play makes ‘our staff’ a dull ‘group’”

Every Wednesday, 15 of our employees ski in the Cranmore Mountain Meisters under the catchy team name “Fritzer’s Blitzers”.  It’s the day of the week they all look forward to.

Now don’t get me wrong, they are not professionals by any means.  I think our team points as of now is 727.  That doesn’t put us in last, I don’t think, but pretty dang close.  We do have a handful of members that are exceptional skiiers, and then of course some not so great that simply do it for the pure joy.  I personally do not ski (can you imagine a local of the valley not skiing???) but listening to some of their stories when they come back are pretty hysterical.  Some fall, okay maybe more than some, but it doesn’t seem to matter to them.  It’s all about the Meisters, and my favorite, the after season party!  Here’s to a great season….even if there wasn’t a ton of snow!

Apres Ski Swiss Fondue

February 10th, 2010

What better way to warm up and relax after a long and tiresome day on the slopes or trails than in our cozy lounge or curled up in front of the fireplace with our traditional and delicious Swiss Fondue for two.  There is a custom that originated in Switzerland where if a lady loses her bread in the fondue she pays a kiss to the nearest man.  If a man loses his bread in the fondue, he buys the next round of drinks.  Of course it goes without say that it is not good form to make someone else lose his or her bread.

Swiss Fondue is offered nightly from 4pm to 7pm in the lounge area of the hotel.   Also, on Friday and Saturday nights starting at 8:30 in our lounge, our own amazingly talented piano player, Judy Herrick, will be performing for the crowd.  So as you can see, there is always something to do for everyone.  Come on in and enjoy the fondue and after that a cocktail or two while enjoying the talents of Judy.

See you there!

Tomato Bisque Recipe

February 4th, 2010

Everytime someone leaves our award winning dining room we always here the same thing…..”I wish I could have that recipe”.  Our Chef, Brian Gazda has done just that.  The Wentworth has taken some favorites off our dining room menu and will be posting some recipes throughout the months.  This week is his Smokey Tomato Bisque.  If I can be honest, I’m not very big on tomato soup, but this bisque is out of this world.  Delicious!!

1 Spanish Onion                                                                   3 Cloves of Garlic

1Tsp Fresh Chopped Thyme                                               Salt and Pepper

8 Plum Tomatoes (quartered)                                             1C White Wine

2 TBS Tomato Paste                                                            TBS Parsley Chopped

3C Chicken Stock

3oz Olive Oil

1Qt Heavy Cream

Small dice onion & garlic sweat on low heat with olive oil until translucent or tender. Drizzle with white wine and reduce by half. Add tomato and chicken stock & slowly simmer, reducing by half. Add tomato paste, thyme, parsley, heavy cream and slowly simmer 20 minutes. Use an immersion blender to puree the soup and strain through china cap or small colander. Press soup through a ladle.

In a sauce pot, bring soup back to a simmer and season with salt and pepper. Add heavy cream for desired consistency.

ENJOY!!!!

Starting to book for Summer Lunch Bus Tours

January 27th, 2010

With all this unseasonably warm weather I can’t help but think of summer already!  I know I’m getting a little ahead of myself, but it’s never too early to start planning.  There are still plenty of dates still available.

This summer season, we would love to welcome all bus tours that will be up here in the area visiting, whether it is for  a shopping expedition, site seeing, hiking, etc.  What better why to unwind after a day of strenuous activity (yes shopping can definitely be strenuous) than on our comfortable deck sipping a nice summer cocktail, dining on an over-stuffed lobster roll all while enjoying the fresh air and beautiful views.

If you are planning a bus tour and would like more information, please contact Kathleen in the sales office at kathleen@thewentworth.com or by phoning 800-637-0013.  See you this summer!

The Front Desk Staff Cross Country Skiing

January 11th, 2010

On Tuesday January 4th Pat, Ellie, Irina and Karen from The Wentworth Front Desk took advantage of a gracious offer from Thom at the Jackson Ski Touring Foundation and took a complimentary cross country ski lesson with equipment rental for the day. We arrived at 10:30AM and were promptly taken care of by Denise and before we knew it we were on the trails! Our teacher Barbara was excellent and showed us how to glide, stop, go uphill, slow down on a not so steep slope and slow down on a steep slope. Our one hour lesson turned into a two hour lesson and we laughed the entire time.
After the lesson Fritz showed up with a lunch and we all skied on the Ellis River Trail to the warming hut to enjoy a well deserved lunch. What we learned was that not only is cross country skiing fun, but it can be enjoyed by everyone, of any age and of any availability. We encourage all of our guests to take advantage of this winter wonderland right outside the door of The Wentworth   No special equipment or clothing is needed – all the equipment you will need is available at the center and a warm hat, gloves and coat is all you need.
My only wish is that I had a picture of us to put on here but our one camera that we brought with us was out of battery.

Late Fall is Still Special in New England

November 24th, 2009

The trees are mostly bare now, and the snows have not yet begun to fall in earnest. Believe it or not, this is one of my favorite times in New England. I love the way the dark tree reach their spindly arms into in dusky skies. I love how the crisp air starts to smell of snow – enticing hints of the winter to come. I love the days when I awaken to startlingly blue skies.

Late November and early December in New Hampshire are quiet as the state winds down from the leaf peeping frenzy of October and gears up for snow and skiers. This is an often overlooked time to travel to a New Hampshire hotel, but consider the advantages: no crowds, no bugs, and the same picturesque New England towns that are here the rest of the year. You can’t go wrong.

The White Mountains are as lovely as ever. Hiking can be truly enjoyable at this time of year, although hikers need to be prepared for sudden snows and drops in temperature. Any outdoor activity – even rushing from shop to shop – makes you feel like you deserve to spend the evening in front of the fire with a warm cup of tea or a glass of wine. The chill in the air makes sinking into your private hot tub feel positively delicious.

We are currently offering two great specials at our hotel White Mountains: 20% off weekends and 30% off mid-week bookings of standard or superior rooms through mid December. Spend a night or two with us while you shop for gifts at Santa’s Village in Jefferson, or recover from hosting Thanksgiving, or rest before hosting Christmas. Enjoy a Jingle Bell Chocolate Sleigh Tour of Jackson. No matter what you choose to do, you are sure to enjoy your time with us.

Foliage Update

September 20th, 2009

Jackson Falls, October 2009 There hasn’t been much change yet in the foliage in the White Mountains region, the area remains mostly green with sprinkled oranges and reds along waterways and swamps. However we just had our first frost last night (09/19/09) which will start the push for our area into colorful autumn glory.

We are anticipating peak foliage around the first week of October, but if you want to see some color without the peak room rates try visiting us the week of September 25th through the 30th. Just a short drive north will bring you to some beautiful foliage. We will guide you on tours through the notches for optimal foliage viewing. Many say this is the best time to visit.
