Spring: Renewal and Regrowth

Spring seems to finally be making its way to beautiful Jackson, NH!  The sun is shining, the snow is melting and soon enough, the renewal and regrowth that comes with spring
in the Mt. Washington Valley will be upon us!

While our landscapes are busy blooming, The Wentworth is also going through a bit of a renewal and growth of its own!  Normally a slow time of year in the valley, there are lots of new things happening at The Wentworth!  Our Thornycroft Cottage is undergoing a major renovation that will allow us to service our guests even better than before!

The new Thornycroft Cottage will feature a larger, state of the art kitchen, a new gym facility with private massage rooms and twelve new deluxe hot tub suites.  These new suites will feature a king bed, gas fireplace, a separate parlor and a hot tub on a
private balcony.  The addition is scheduled to open in July 2014, and we already have guest reservations for the new suites in the months following!

Since the former Thornycroft Suite was our “Honeymoon Suite”, we will be designating one of the new suites as such.  I can’t express enough how excited our brides and grooms are to be able to be some of the first to experience these beautiful new rooms!

The new building is coming along nicely as you can see in the photos above taken on April 8th.  There is still work to be done, but we are very excited about the results so far and can’t wait for the finished product!  We are confident that the already excellent experience that guests are accustomed to at The Wentworth will be elevated to a new level of relaxation and enjoyment!

Spring Skiing in NH: Tuckerman’s Ravine

Spring skiing is the ideal way to get away from it all, and engage in a bit of rest and relaxation. A wild, and unspoiled, swath of mountainous territory, Tuckerman’s Ravine is the perfect combination of raw beauty, exhilarating views and pristine snow. Nestled on the shoulder of Mount Washington, this area is also home to our wonderful Inn.

Ungroomed, these rugged areas offer a challenge to even the most seasoned mountain skier. Needless to say, there are also no ski lifts to get you to your favorite area to ski. You will need to hike to get to your chosen spot, so make sure you plan accordingly when packing your essential items. Experts recommend that you drink between two and four quarts of water each day in order to maintain your health. Be sure to include high protein snacks that are packed with nutrition.

In many cases, the 2.4 mile hike along Tuckerman’s Ravine Trail can take upward of three hours, often making you long for the comfort and tranquility of our Inn. The trail involves mountaineering skills and the use of tools, such as an ice ax and crampons. The proper clothing and food supplies are also crucial to ensuring that your time skiing Tuckerman’s Ravine is as productive and comfortable as you desire. Dressing in layers is recommended as is wearing hiking boots while carrying your ski equipment.

Due to where Tuckerman’s Ravine is located, sudden weather changes are possible. This also lends itself to the beautiful views you experience while staying here at The Wentworth Inn. Crevasses and avalanches are a fact of daily life when it comes to skiing these backcountry areas. Other hazards include falling ice and undermined snow where running water underneath the snow layer weakens it considerably, often causing it to give way unexpectedly.

Tuckerman’s Ravine offers challenges that enable you to grapple with nature at her finest. Soaring views, adrenaline rushing ski runs and exhilarating mountain climbs are only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to enjoying spring skiing at the best that White Mountain has to offer. Due to the fact that the ravine loses its access to direct sunlight after about 2:30pm, forest rangers suggest descending the headwall of the ravine before that time.

This gives you the perfect excuse to unwind from the challenges and exhilaration of skiing Tuckerman’s Ravine. The Wentworth Inn is a picturesque place in which to enjoy yourself. Partake in our delicious menu of freshly made to order delicacies. Relax with your favorite cocktail by a roaring fire or marvel at the stunning views from the window seat in your cottage. You can also treat yourself to a relaxing spa treatment for a well-rounded spring getaway.

You will find that there are also plenty of hiking trails and other snow-based activities to enjoy as well. From sleigh rides to ice skating, you can celebrate spring with action packed excitement using The Wentworth Inn as your comfortable home base.

We would be so honored if you would take the time to vote for us.
Thank you
Ellie and Fritz Koeppel

It’s time to vote for your favorite restaurants and eateries in New Hampshire!

Just by voting you will be entered in a drawing for prizes ranging from meals at one of the state’s best restaurants to free tickets to the Best of NH Party!

The food portion of voting will be open from February 3 to March 24. The ballot for shops, services and people will open on March 3.

Each category is populated with restaurants that have received a significant amount of votes – including popular 2013 write-ins – during the last 12 years of Best of NH. Some are past winners, some are Editor’s Picks and some have never won before. Each category also has a write-in option if your choice is not listed.

This year’s ballot is only available electronically, and we ask that you please fill out a minimum of 10 categories for your ballot to count.

You do not need to fill out every category. If you don’t have a preference, you can just skip the question and leave it blank. There’s no need to write in “don’t know,” don’t care,” etc.

Only one ballot per person is allowed.

This year’s Best of NH winners will be revealed in the July issue, and a party to celebrate the winners will be held on Thursday, June 19, at the Verizon Wireless Arena in Manchester.

Skiing in NH’s Mount Washington Valley: Three Powder Picks

Quintessential New England charm, luxurious accommodations, extraordinary customer service and an award-winning restaurant make the Wentworth Inn a popular year-round destination. But there’s another reason winter sports enthusiasts return year and after year — actually, there are 13 of them: the ski resorts and XC centers located within 30 minutes of our front door!

The critics agree that NH’s Mount Washington Valley is a truly unique East Coast destination; the area has been declared a top 25 ski town by National Geographic as well as the premiere American ski town by TripAdvisor. And while the Mount Washington Valley offers plenty of perfect powder, we’ve narrowed the list down to three of our favorite spots for exhilarating New Hampshire White Mountain skiing.

Family Friendly Fun

Located in the bustling town of North Conway just 15 minutes away from us, the classic Cranmore Mountain Resort offers 170 skiable acres, 57 trails and 9 lifts, along with a mix of easy, intermediate and difficult trails. From intro to ski and snowboard lessons to camps and seasonal programs, Cranmore’s experienced instructors take beginners from “pizza” to parallel in no time. Teens, meanwhile, will love shredding it up in the terrain parks. Factor in a mountain coaster, giant swing, soaring eagle zip line and tubing park, and Cranmore is truly a one-of-a-kind destination.

Ski History

An awe-inspiring drive from the Wentworth through scenic Crawford Notch leads you to Bretton Woods, famed site of the 1944 Bretton Woods Conference. New Hampshire’s largest ski resort with 464 acres, 52 trails, 35 glades and three terrain parks, Bretton Woods also offers night skiing and riding. Adrenaline junkies will enjoy being pulled by a team of sled dogs or a treeline-topping Canopy Tour. When the kids aren’t in lessons, they’ll be ice skating, tubing and snowmobiling in the resort’s base area.

Two For the Price of One

Less than 7 miles away from us, Attitash awaits: two connected mountains featuring 67 trails designed to suit skiers of all abilities. A combination of standard New English runs, glades, tree skiing and progressive freestyle terrain parks make Attitash a sought-after spot. The Nor-Easter Mountain Coaster offers even more thrills for adventure-seekers. Need another reason to check out Attitash? As the sister mountain of nearby Wildcat, Attitash offers skiers and riders joint lift tickets all season long.

Your Escape Awaits

What do all three of these ski resorts have in common besides some of the best skiing on the East Coast? Each is conveniently located near the charming Wentworth Inn right in the heart of the New Hampshire’s picturesque Mount Washington Valley. Book your next New Hampshire adventure or getaway with the Wentworth and prepare to be transported to a winter wonderland.

Cross Country Skiing in Jackson

This past Sunday myself and Annie the hotel dog ventured out up onto the Windy Hill trail network up by Black Mountain for a bit of cross country skiing. It actually ended up to be an eight mile cross country ski and the best part, we had it all to ourselves.

With three inches of fresh powder everything was going our way and even I could not fall. I used “Mushers Wax” on Annie’s paws to prevent snow build up and it worked great. Usually she has to stop several times for me to remove the snow that can build up and become as hard as rocks in her paws making it very difficult for her to go far but this wax worked wonderful and as you can see from the photo she loved it. We followed the Bald Land trail for a couple of miles to a nice scenic vista and of course the best part was coming down. Next Sunday we plan to do the East Pasture Trail to the Woodland Trail, that will be a long way!

During the weekend we had some guests looking for an area to Snowshoe and we sent them up to the Tin Mountain Conservation Center here in Jackson which has a dedicated snow shoe trail network. It is interesting also to hike to one of the first tin mines discovered in America.

So, there is always something to do in Jackson and at The Wentworth – come and see us soon and enjoy our winter wonderland.

A Quick Introduction…

It’s that lovely time in the White Mountains where all the snow has melted, hints of green are visible, flowers are budding, and at the Wentworth we are getting ready for a fun and busy summer. With the relative calm before the next few months I figured I would use this opportunity to introduce myself; My name is Josh Belanger and I am the Dining Room Manager here at the Wentworth. I am relatively new to the Inn, I came aboard in November and I am very happy to be working at such an esteemed location. I had the privilege of being born and raised in “the Valley” and it makes me proud to cater to people who travel from all over the world to see an area I refer to as home. I have been working in the food industry for over 13 years wearing many hats from bus boy, to chef, to bartender, and Maitre’D and I truly enjoy to share my love of food and drink with others. The bar is being renovated as we speak and with it a new cocktail program featuring fresh juices, house made syrups, and fine spirits crafted into seasonal libations. We have a new chef as well who can’t wait to show off his culinary prowess. With all this in mind the question is “Where are you?”  I can’t wait to have you all as my guests and look forward to new and familiar faces alike.

Best Regards,
Joshua D Belanger
Dining Room Manager

Historic Wedding Proposal

In 1869, Joshua Trickey built The Wentworth as a wedding gift to his daughter Georgia Trickey and her husband-to-be, General Marshall Wentworth.  Before they were to be married, General Wentworth respectfully asked Mr. Trickey for his daughters hand in marriage.  We are lucky enough to have this very personal and intimate hand written letter at our historic hotel to this day.  It reads:

New York Nov 30th, 1869

Mr. J. Trickey My dear and respected Sir:

I thank you very much for your favorable answer to my proposal. I never can be grateful enough for the happiness you have bestowed upon me, rest assured that I shall always strive to merit your approbation. I think I can make your daughter happy- we love each other devotedly and are very anxious for your consent to marriage the 1st week in June 1869- and if we can get your consent we shall be very happy- it is very hard for us to be separated from each other for so long- but if you give us your consent to our union then it will not seem half so long and besides it will make us very happy.

I am very anxious to see your lovely daughter once more- it seems an age since I saw her. You can imagine how I feel to be separated from a lady that I love better than my life for two long years and not once having the pleasure of seeing her in the whole time.

Hoping that you will consider my proposal in as favorable a light as you did my other- I thank you again very kindly and close- hoping to hear from you soon.

Yours very respectfully, Marsh C. Wentworth
219 East 69th Street, NY

With such great history, it is only natural for The Wentworth to be considered as one of the most romantic and elegant wedding destinations of the Mount Washington Valley.

Special Offer for the Special Couple!

I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself to those of you who do not already know me.  My name is Kathleen DeVitto and I have had the pleasure of being The Wentworth’s Sales/Wedding Administrator for the past 4+ years.  I am one of the very few people out there who can actually say they enjoy what they do on a day to day basis.  Who wouldn’t enjoy meeting happy bridal couples and hearing their love story?

Planning a wedding can be somewhat nerve wracking, confusing and out right stressful for many brides to be.  There are so many little details that go into planning a memorable day that often times brides overlook.  That’s where I come in.  I will work with each bridal couple every step of the way.  We’ll chat about how they envisioned their day to be and then we’ll come up with creative ideas on how to execute. I keep my couples on track and focused on what details need to be planned next all while still making sure they are having fun, enjoying the process and not losing site of what the day is truly about.

Here we are, the beginning of February, and I can say we are just about booked for every weekend for the rest of 2013.  I do have a couple of weekends open still for July if there are any bridal couples looking to tie the knot soon.  Having as much experience as I do, planning a wedding for this July gives me more than enough time to gather details and customize a spectacular wedding weekend.  Remember, I’ll be there every step of the way to guide you through it.

It is my goal to have all my weekends booked with weddings for the year.  To help with this I would like to present a special offer to any bridal couple who books their wedding with me to be held in the month of July 2013 with a special discount of 100% off our regular tent rental fee of $2750.

For more information please contact me through email at kathleen@thewentworth.com or by calling 1-800-637-0013.

I look forward to creating a magical and memorable day with you!
